U-Save Car and Truck Rental, Isla Verde, Carolina, Puerto Rico, 787-253-4008

It would be hard to find a worse car rental company in Puerto Rico than USave, aka U-Save.  Almost all of the reviews for U-Save give them the lowest rating, with many customers feeling swindled and ripped off.  Here at PuertoRicoNewcomer, we try to give you the best advice, to guide you, to protect you, to warn you.  One car rental company, U-Save, deserves special mention, in a negative way, to warn you to avoid.  To start, their name is misleading, because you will most likely not save money, not save time, not save frustration.  If you don’t take our word for it, look at all the negative reviews.  The business model of U-Save is built on dishonesty.  They lure you in with misleadingly low prices, but once you go to pick up the car, they force you to buy additional options in order to receive the car.  Since this is an off-airport location, you are somewhat stranded, left at the mercy of U-Save, which will show you no mercy!  For example, when you go to reserve, you will see many options that you can select.  Even if you don’t select those options, such as RSS, for Roadside Service, at the rental office, they will require you to buy RSS for $3 per day, even if you do not want it.  Another trick they do is forcing you to buy insurance for $10/day, even if you already have insurance coverage.  This happens if you forget to bring your primary car’s insurance proof, which many people keep in their car.  One more trick is offering to let you use their toll tag.  If you decline this service, but then accidentally end up going through a toll, which is easy to do for a visitor, since the roads are confusing, they will add on a $50 fee for using the toll, plus the charges for going through the toll.  In conclusion, the business model of U-Save is to rip people off, to deceive them, to trick them.

In the same room, just 8 feet away, you will find another desk with NuCar Rental, and next door, 20 feet away,  Sixt Car Rental which have similarly horrible reviews.  These 3 rental car companies may be owned by the same franchisee, as they also share the same shuttle vans and give off the similar unpleasant rental experiences, for false and deceptive business practices.

USave, U-Save Car and Truck Rental will try to rip you off

I don’t think I can say enough to cover the shittiness of this company.  I returned the car and was informed that there was damage to the vehicle – I didn’t realize there was damage but I figured VISA would handle it.  Well, they charged me $500 at the time of return, and I will be getting back $62 because Visa is not looking to pay for:  $81 Loss of use, $235 diminished value and $125 Administrative costs.  These people pretend to be inexpensive, they are thieves and should be avoided at all costs.

Terrible customer service. We waited over 1 hr when we first arrived to pick or reservation up. Charged us 20.00 more than what was said when we booked it online. We also took the car through toll ways and accidentally drove through one auto express way. Instead of USave charging us the 1.20 for the toll they charged us that plus $50.00

  • 5/24/2013

Bad bad vehicles. They break down after an hour or so. Maybe they re-set the malfunction light long enough to get us out of the area. The tires are in bad shape, can’t hold air and the car was sticky, dirty and full of smoke.  Good luck trying to reach someone, they tell you to call back the next day. Then you call the next day, they tell you to call back the next day. ( no joking or exaggeration).

Loved Puerto Rico, 2nd time back and will never ever rent from here again. When we 1st checked in to them, we saw customers angry and leaving the place, we thought it was the customer being crabby? Nope! Now we see why . Don’t try it you will be like us.

And we were charged more for less car rental then the actual longer rental we actually had reserved for. After all the issues we decided to turn in the car and go elsewhere with our business.

Horrible company.  A car that Usave.com themselves said was $101.97 “including all taxes/fees/surcharges said my invoice” ended up costing us $192.28.  They said those were the fees and their own website doesn’t state them. We could just leave if we didn’t want to pay is what they said.  Being as this was at a pickup location off the airport I had no choice but to get the car.  The car itself was beat to hell.  Hole in the bumper, dent/scratches everywhere.  Power nothing.  It did start/run so I suppose that’s what all the added fees are after they’ve got you stuck there.  AVOID this place!!  We ended up going to Thrifty the next week and got a car around the same price which was in much better condition and new everything.  They did add an additional 11.5% that their invoice did not include in their price as well however. To top this all off i”ve been calling for 2 weeks to rectify this and I’ve not gotten one return call.  The email to customerservice@usave.com bounces back!!  This company won’t be around for long.

DON’T rent a car here. Really bad cars. Ours was dirty inside. Bad brakes.  It’s worth it to pay a little bit more n not making notice on every single stop n have people Staring at you.

First off we had to call to have the shuttle come and pick is up from the airport instead of them already being there waiting on us.  Then we get to the place and it doesn’t not look appealing from the get go.  We get there and it was horrible service,  they didn’t have too many options as far as cars went even though we already had a reservation for one, we end up having to pay way more than it was even expected which we were not happy about, but we were exhausted from the long flight and just went with it.  After that hassle we finally get a look at the car and it was somewhat ok looking from the outside, but the inside was horrible!!!!  This place is a joke.  We had one problem after the next with them.  Do not go here, you will regret it and it will take up your vacation time dealing with those idiots.

  • 12/26/2013

Shuttle took over 50 minutes to arrive at the airport, and that was after trying to call the office for 20 minutes and calling the U-Save corporate phone line to get an alternate number.  When I did get through the guy was super rude and acted put out to have answered the phone at all. Other rental car agency’s shuttles passed us multiple times. I think the shuttle guy just naps somewhere until someone calls to complain. The car was disgusting and poorly maintained. We had the misfortune of running into a bit of rain, only to find that the wiper blades were shredded. The brakes were worn out and noisy and the alignment was completely crazy. Even returning the car was a nightmare. DON’T RENT HERE! You will regret it.

  • DO NOT USE U-SAVE CAR AND TRUCK RENTAL!!  We got charged an extra $52.35 dollars for their rip off toll road e-pass when we paid for all tolls after driving around the island for 1 day.  They try to charge an extra 5 dollars a day for this service when, after paying every toll!!  They automatically charged us without consent and after signing the car back in.  Awful business practice and buyer beware!!

First of all this is the Puerto Rico independently owned branch…they don’t deserve any star. I made a mistake trying to save some money for this trip and selected from Cheap Rentals .com this horrible rental little kiosk. The place was disorganized , the car(s) were so-so (little KIA Rio,s) the representative that took care of us was in a rush of getting us out of there and when we returned the car we knew why. In a rush he checked the “dings”in the car a 2014 Kia Rio…I was a bit surprised how fast he went over everything but honestly we were tired and wanted to get to our designated place , we spent in PR 7 days and only used 234 Miles  that’s around 33 miles per day. When we went back to return the car in a minute the guy found a “fresh  damage”in the front bumper . I very politely told them that was a huge , obviously old damage and due to the extent of the bump I would have felt it. most of the roads in PR are in bad condition , but still something bigger than a pot hole caused that damage. To make a long story short , they charged $ 500.00 for damages to my AMEX. I have that amount in dispute right now and AMEX is investigating. Just to give you an idea , the 2014 car had over 48,000 miles on it and there were nicks and scratches everywere. NEVER RENT FROM THESE CROOKS. from what I am reading in other reviews from this branch in PR my bad experience is not unique…avoid them at all cost, spend a bit in a more safer rental company

I wished that I could give zero stars. I’ve been traveling between PR and the US every year for almost 20 years. I always rent a car, as I like to have flexibility of moving around when visiting my family. But this has been the worst experience I’ve had over the last two decades

First, the exterior and interior of the vehicle had certainly seen better times. But hey, it was a cheap rental. Then, they make you sign (and pay) for the liability insurance, otherwise, they won’t rent you the car. I didn’t have much of a choice (and  that’s never been an issue when renting a car in PR). Then onto adding the fee for the toll tag. PR has an electronic tolling system that requires each car to have a tag, and unfortunately, you have no choice other than either being charged $50 + tolls or a $7+ daily fee. Normally, the tag costs $10 (one time fee), plus tolls, so you can imagine how much money they make out of that (BTW, that’s how all car rentals in PR work). You would never spend $8 in tolls in one day, unless you are in sales traveling all over the island.

But my nightmare really was when I went to return the car. The car had no wheel covers when I took it. But they conveniently lost the contract, so there was no evidence of all the issues with the crappy piece of car I rented, including the fact that the wheel covers were missing. They dared to say that cars do not leave the rental center without wheel covers… but I bet that a gray Nissan Versa with plate number IHZ-270 is out there right now without wheel covers.

Never renting from them again. It probably cost me the same or as much as renting for another major rental car company.

    POOR SERVICE

On Jan. 21, 2016 we arrived in Puerto Rico and went to the U-SAVE rental office at
the Isla Verde Mall, Ave. Los Gobernadores, Carolina, PR  to pick up the car we had reserved and confirmed on Jan. 11, 2016 Conf. #LSV001EB17 We had rented the car for fourteen days.
At the rental office we were told by the manager, that there were NO cars available, but that he had made arrangements with another rental company (LEASEWAY) where they would honor our reservation at the same price we had contracted.
When we arrived at the LEASEWAY car rental office we were told that the price for the rental would be $6.90 more per day than U-SAVE rental car – a considerable amount for the two-week period!
We then contacted the U-SAVE manager, who told us:  “Well, if you don’t like it, we could take you back to the airport, and you can call a relative to pick you up”.
His attitude was not only rude but unprofessional

    THIS WAS A DISASTER.

To start, it took 45 minutes for a shuttle to come get us (also had I realized this was the only rental car not at the airport, I wouldn’t have used it period) Then there were 2 employees managing the line, in this half ass office next to a Denny’s, shared with NU car, and all around just sketchy.  Here we wasted another 40 minutes in line.  THEN they wanted a $500 deposit and proof I had my own car insurance.
But here is where we had to walk away.  After wasting nearly 2 hours, we walk outside with our car paperwork and get in another line to now wait for the car.  Seeing that no one had left yet, we were prepared to wait another 40 minutes.
Our car happened to be located right in front so we begin to inspect it – to save ourselves some time.  We noticed neither bumper was properly connected on our 2013 Kia Rio – which is what they considered MIDSIZE.
We went back inside to ask for another car, the man asks what car I have – which i reply #XXX – and he says, oh yes, the bumpers.  not a big deal, its only a screw or 2.  SO HE KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE.  And if it was that easy to fix, why wasn’t it fixed.
I replied with, I am uncomfortable driving a car with a bumper not fully attached, what if something happens, and was informed ‘that’s why i have insurance’.
I promptly asked for my money back, went outside to wait for the shuttle back to the hotel and then had to get in a cab line.

It is one big scam, a dangerous one, that cost us hours of our vacation.

Small, one desk operation. Quoted one price, arrived to a young man forcing expensive supplemental insurance on us tripling the cost of the rental. Without remorse, he stated he was “required” to speak to our insurance agent, even though I had email documents stating our car insurance state side covered car rentals in Puerto Rico. We ended up calling a cab and going to another rental company.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! HORRIBLE experience. I made a reservation online for $104 and was originally very happy with this price but it is a complete lie. We arrived at the airport and waited for over 30 minutes for a shuttle while watching shuttles for other rental car companies go by 3-4 times each. USAVE San Juan, PR is just one guy at a desk in the corner of a tiny office in a strip mall. The guy driving the shuttle dropped one of our bags and broke something. Then we get to the guy behind the counter and he tells us smugly that the rental is actually going to be triple the price. There are multiple hidden fees that he would not explain to us. He said we had to pay for insurance, even though we had proof our insurance company covered rental cars in Puerto Rico. Insurance was going to be over $100 alone. Everyone in the shuttle with us left with the same problems- nobody actually got a rental from USAVE. I watched the guy behind the counter made several people cry because he was so rude. I have no idea how they stay in business other than the fact they still charged my credit card for the reservation. I am disputing this charge now. This company’s business is a classic bait and switch- they get people coming after a long day of traveling, stuck away from the airport or any other place, and then force increased fees. Please do not make a reservation at this company- for your sake and so maybe they will eventually go out of business! The price is a lie, and so is the fact you need to buy their insurance to get a rental. No one else we talked to in Puerto Rico had this problem. You legally have the choice to waive their extra insurance. What USAVE is doing is illegal and they should be put out of business.

Don’t rent from this place the cars are full of roaches. I had to have the car fumigated and these people after I told them what was going on they left me waiting for someone to come and exchange the car for me . One day of my vacation wasted. I have the pictures and the receipt and all the dead roaches in the car. They won’t work with you to at least give you back the coast of the fumigation and the car had to be clean.

I gave it 1 star because it doesn’t let me put no stars. U Save no time, U Save no money because of the hidden charges like Toll fees without consent. First of all I called the shuttle number they gave me to get picked up from the airport & they took for ever to come, then when I get to their office they tell me that they are still cleanning my car eventhough I had reservations for 10am & it was 11am by the time I got to their office. When they bring me my car, it was supposed to be a mid size car (Corrola, Sentra or similar) not a Versa. On the website they had  a Nissan Versa as a compact car as the description. I brought it up to their attention and they said that no the Versa is a midsize to them & that there where no other cars availalbe. They still charged me for a midsize & by the time I called around for other cars everybody was sold out, so now I was stuck with this car.  When I get in my car it had no power nothing, no power windows or locks, any time I had to open the trunk I had to use the key because it didnt have any switch to open from the inside. The only thing good about this situation was the gas milage & that I was able to park it anywhere because of it’s size. Then when I returned the car they lady charged my card again instead of crediting back my card for the deposit. After being on the phone with them for over an hour they finally fixed the problem, but never no apology for the mistakes, never any type of remorse. I picked them because they were $15 cheaper than the named car rentals, but now I know never to go with them ever again.

The car was SOO scratched up and the check engine light was on but the ABSOLUTE worst was that the car was infected with Cockaroaches…. To top it off the rubber gasket aound the trunk lid was out of place so the trunk would hardly close. It required to be SLAMMED in order to stay shut. there was a puddle of water in the bottom of the trunk which had a horrible smell. The interior of the car was not vacummed properly, it had obvious signs of Sand around the passenger side and back seats…. 2 weeks after returning from my vacation, I noticed a $50 additional charge on my credit card statement. I called and the stupid number comes up disconnected, tried again and got a message asking if I had a mail box with the PR telephone company to enter it….WTH??? Tried again later and some guy Angel answered but told me he couldn’t look up my contract to call back later and ask for Rafael… This is absolutely ridiculous,…btw the shuttle bus did not have AC.

We waited over an hour for the shuttle to arrive and it may have taken longer if it had not been for the airport employees calling U-Save.  The car they rented to us was in bad shape.  Dents everywhere, the rim was bent and the tire was low.  We decided to take the car anyway after waiting an additional 30 minutes.  As we were driving down road the brakes went all the way to the floorboard, this did not happen when we first started off.  I managed to get the car back and in one piece, but I was very shaken by the experience.  From the time it took for our plane to land and get to our hotel in Rio Grande was 4 hours!  The place is a hole in the wall and the other car rental place from U-Save their employees were rude, raciest and inhumane.  Do not rent from this company; otherwise you may not get where your going in one piece.  Our hotel was fabulous!

Totally ripped me off.  The car was a wreck, no spare tire, and out of alignment.  Frankly it was not safe to drive the car. The tank was not full when they gave the vehicle to me, then they later charged me to fill it up.  They charged me more that the online agreement.  They actually charged me an additional unauthorized $80.00.  They refused to explain why and later advised my credit card company that it was for refueling, and paying $1.50 toll, that I was not able to pay, because the attendant at the autoexpress lane could not take my cash.  I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. Don’t use them unless you want to risk your life, and be ripped off.

Based on the previous reviews, I imagine they’ve improved how they run their company over the last couple years. However, they still have a long way to go. On the positive side, we had a new-ish vehicle (no power locks or anything), and it seemed to function just fine. Nothing fancy, but it wasn’t falling apart like some people discussed. Also, the location is really convenient to the airport and the Isla Verde hotels.

Now on to the negative. When we arrived at the airport, there was no shuttle. We walked around half the perimeter of the airport, and couldn’t find the shuttle. We arrived at 7pm and the rental company closes at 8, so when we couldn’t find the shuttle by about 7:45, there was a slight panic. I had to call the company, and they let us know they would send a shuttle. A hassle, for sure, but at least a shuttle is in existence. Once we arrived at the rental office, it took at least a half hour to get our rental, and we were the only customers in the place. Also, like many others, the charges were nearly double the quote that we received online. When I asked for explanation of these extra charges, the worker shrugged his shoulders and said….surcharges? I told him there was a separate space for those, and then he changed his answer to…maybe taxes? Well, there was already a line item charge for those too, so who knows what we paid for!

If I visited here again, I would most definitely go with a more reputable, recognizable company.

The next morning, I successfully rented a car at SIXT.  So, the Orbitz/USAVE reservation was, I presumed canceled.

To my surprise , I had two charges on my debit card.  One from Orbitz for one week car rental and the other from U-SAVE for $25.  With less than desirable customer service, ORBITZ reversed the charges.  I also asked Orbitz to pursue the refund with U-SAVE which they never did.

BEWARE rentals with the U-SAVE near the San Juan Airport.  The U-SAVE are individually owned which means corporate office cannot intervene immediately.  I phoned U-SAVE three times and left message for manager.  By the third call, my debit card charge was bumped up from $25 to $50.  I recently ended up reporting it to my bank.  It has been over four weeks now with no response from U-SAVE. Don’t rent from here. What went from $158 for a week to $433. For nonsense fees. Will never ever rent from this place again. For that kind of money I received a Nissan that had an old radio so no music because the radio had static. Its crazy that you pay all this money for an old car. Lesson learned.

I wish I can give no star at all!! I do not recommend this place to anyone. First there’s surcharges that it’s not mentioned when you’re making a reservation and then you receive crappiest cars that’s about to break down and apparently that’s what happened to us. Battery died three days in a row and it’s really ruined my vacation in Puerto Rico and to make it worse, everytime battery died and I called the location to see what we can do about the situation, never able to make it to someone!!! What’s the point of having a phone number if you’re never going to pick up? And when I called corporate office, since its independently operated company, there’s nothing they can help you with but they advise if you want to fix the vehicle, anything over $50, you need prior approval!! How?? When I can’t get through to anyone?!
Bottom line is that I don’t have to deal with this crap situation and ruin my vacation to begin with!
DO NOT rent here!! Unless you’re planning to ruin your vacation! We did not save anything!!

Like everyone else there was an additional 30% in fees added to our online reservation which was supposed to include all “surcharges/taxes/fees”.  They basically said if we didn’t want the car we didn’t need to take it.  We had little choice but to rent it.  I’ll be in contact w/ corporate and my credit card company if this isn’t rectified by them.  Do not use this company, when all is said and done you’ll spend more with these guys than a reputable place at the airport.  Beyond this they lied to us and stated the toll booths did not take cash and we would be hit w/ a $50/ toll fee if we did not opt for their toll transponder for around $6/day.  So when all was said and done our bill was nearly double what Usave.com said it would be.

They will not let you rent without insurance.
It’s about $25 for each day, unless you provide your own insurance which might not be accepted depending on your insurance company. Also, the insurance you provide only works if your car is not being used, parked.

The guy at the desk told me a story about a client they rented to using this person’s insurance and when the person crashed he had to pay out of his pocket for damages because his insurance was not accepted by U-Save.
That story right there does not sound like it will make you buy their insurance, it sounds like incompetence/negligence of their part, and if true, a lawsuit should have taken place.

Avoid. Try companies at the airport, and if you have Costco membership use it to get a discount through the Costco Travel program.

If you did book it but can’t resolve the insurance issue, cancel it, it should be a $15 penalty fee.

I’m not sure what you’re saving here, but it sure isn’t time.  This was about the slowest service I ever received from a car rental agency.  My nightmare started at 11 AM.  My typical experience with one takes about 5 minutes.  This place takes the cake for the second worst car rental agency I’ve ever dealt with (the first is one in Cancun, Mexico, and the brakes for the car I rented wasn’t working)!  Let me add that this place goes by two other names: Regional Car Rental and NU Car Rentals.

First off, the shuttle took forever, but that wasn’t as bad actually trying to get your car from the service desk.   I was third in line, and everyone ahead of me was having issues.  The first lady was told that she wasn’t going to get a refund for any of the days she returned her car early, and the other guy appeared to not be able to use his credit card for some reason.  There was a couple that was only trying to return a car and discovered several charges that were not supposed to be made.  They said they waived the insurance, and the office had the signed waiver in their folder and still charged them for the rental insurance.  My confirmation e-mail only stated that I needed to show proof that my credit card would be taking care of the insurance, so I was hoping they wouldn’t need proof of insurance from my insurance company because I didn’t bother to bring it.

Well, when it came time for me it was about 12:30 PM, so my nightmare was still going.  I gave them my credit card and driver’s license at 12:00 PM, so it took them a while to make a photocopy of it, I guess.  An hour later I was told I needed my primary car’s insurance card.  Why the hell would I need that when it won’t cover any of the rental car anyway?  Luckily, I had an e-mail with the temporary card attached to it.  Thank goodness!  The deposit was $300 and takes about 3-5 days to disappear from your credit card’s activity, so they say.  The car took about 15 minutes to get.  The guy brought me the wrong car and had to go downstairs to get me another one.  When he came back, I received a dirty car, one fit for Pig-Pen.  There were  several dents and scratches and the tank was half full.  They said they could wash the car, but it would take time.  Oh, eff that noise!  I’m not waiting another 2 hours to see one guy clean my car in Island time.  My nightmare ended at 1:30 PM.  I’ve seen pond water and dead snails move faster than these guys.

And to top it all off, when I turned my car in, which was a much faster experience, the lady at the counter let me cut in line because she knew her ordeal was going to be her own nightmare.  Stick with the Hertzes, Avises, and Enterprises, people.  Don’t let the low price fool you; this place is NOT worth it.

If I could give this company a negative rating I would.  Absolutely, do not use this rental company under any circumstances.  1) They company operates under three different names:  NU Car Rental, U Save Car Rental, and Regional Car Rental.  2) I booked a compact vehicle for 5-days at a rate of $65.00. However, according to the sales agent the rate you receive on Expedia or Hotwire is just an “estimate”.  By the time he finished explaining all the additional taxes and fees they want to add on the rate will double or trip.  For example, $7.95/day for second driver,  $11.95/day if you don’t bring a copy of your auto insurance card, and $9.95/day toll option. If you decline the toll option, they tell you that if you go through a toll and don’t have cash to pay they will charge you a $50 fee.  3) I think it is customary for most rental car companys to place somewhere between a $200-$300 hold on your credit card for the rental. This company insists on placing a $500 hold on your credit card ($1000 for Visa debit).

This is all before we’ve even seen the car or pulled out of the lot.  The car itself did not look bad from the outside.  It didn’t look great either though. There were a few scratches and dings which we noted on the inspection form.  However, the inside of the car was filthy, seats soiled, and there was a mildew smell inside.  Spilled stinky drink residue in cup holders and crumbs.  Unfortunately, this was a holiday weekend and I was unable to switch to another car company like Hertz at the last minute.  Moving on, once we pulled off the lot and started driving the car it actually stalled out a couple times.  The key FOB did not work either.

Back to the toll option we declined,  we were able to avoid the tolls until the last day of our trip.  It was only a couple dollars but what the rental agent failed to inform us is the toll agents won’t even accept cash if you are in a rental car with the toll transponder.  So, they made us go through anyway.

Seriously, this was the worst rental car ever.  Absolutely do not rent from them or any of the names they operate under.  They need to be reported to the BBB and removed from the list of recommended companies on Expedia and Hotwire.

First, when we got to the airport, there is no phone nor contact info for this company. I called the phone number provided by Orbitz, and it was disconnected. Had to Google the company to get a current phone number. Once we call, the shuttle that they use is an old van, no a/c, music blasting. We got to the rental office, where the price was changed (from my original Orbitz quote). They told me that Orbitz doesn’t show an additional tax ($15) nor the toll pass ($5 daily) which are both obligated to take.

The car itself was horrendous, no maintenance at all!

For the price I finally ended up paying, I could have used a more reputable car rental. Never again am I renting from this company!

Do not use this company which also goes under Regional and NU. The car was not safe there were apparent issues that needed to be fixed. There was an immense amount of damage on the car and we had customer service issues. The owner Omar was in the back office but refused to come out and talk directly with us. Who has ever heard of such a thing? Rent from one of the more reputable agencies on the Island. Omar you just lost our family’s business!

By far one of the cheaper car options in the area. Took a $16 cab ride from the hotel on Ashford to Carolina to get the car because it was about $40 cheaper per day than Hertz and the others around our hotel. They had a car seat, an automatic car, and the staff was quite fast once it was our turn for service. They only have one guy manning the office and are actually pretty busy. We had to wait about 1/2 hr for our turn, but once we were called we had the car in hand in about 15 min.

We arrived at 1:30pm It’s after 2pm and we’re still waiting for their shuttle to pick us up to take us to their rental location.
Finally the shuttle comes. We arrive at the location and it’s literally a door – the size of a half bathroom in an apartment. Only one person checking the reservations, and payment, and that same person is the one receiving drop offs and giving the rentals. Needless to say, it’s about another half hour to 40 minutes until your done with this whole process. They did give us an upgrade on our rental so points for that.
Unfortunately same thing happened when returning the car. A line of about 7 customers outside the door waiting to return or get their cars. That was a bit stressful, watching the time go by while we’re supposed to be at the airport checking bags, checking in, etc.

The guy that works there is very nice, and doing as much as he can being alone doing everything (thank God they have a 2nd person driving the shuttle). They definitely need more employees, then we’ll get the better prices plus good/ fast service.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY.
After their hidden fees, the price was higher than other companies I was quoted. The car was in TERRIBLE shape. Aside from the numerous scratches, dings, stained seats and broken door handle, the brake pads were GONE. so when the break was applied, it made terrible noises and then would continue after the break was no longer being used. We were on the other side of the island and tried calling multiple times but no one ever answered the phone, so we continued using the car when necessary so that we didn’t ruin our vacation.
This company are hustlers without concern for the safety or comfort of their customers.

BEWARE!! — DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE!! Just like the other person posted, this place also goes by Nu Car Rental and Regional Car Rental.

I rented from them between 6/27/2013 and 7/1/2013 for $171.20, BUT because of a really minor clearcoat rub on the front right bumper, they charged me an extra $300!! I don’t even know how it got there. It was probably already there but I overlooked it when I did the walk around inspection… anybody would because it’s so unnoticeable. When I returned the car, the rep walked around the car with an extremely stringent eye looking for ANY thing to call out for. Even if this was a legit damage, $300 is way too steep for a $30 buff job. They will try to rip you off if you don’t get their insurance coverage, which I had to decline several times. They didn’t like that I had my own insurance. Now I have to deal with the hassle of going through my insurance in putting in a claim. Steer clear from these people if you want your trip to San Juan to be pleasant one!!

These people are horrible. We rented a car and it was breaking down. We got to their location and they said we had rented with the company next to them not with tem. How odd because that same employee was the one who impacted the car and give it to us when we rented it. DO NOT rent with these people. Cars are a wreck, service is horrendous! Wish I could give negative one star.

First at the Puerto Rico airport – it took forever for the bus to come to pick us up.  The other rental agencies had at least two buses go through to U-Save’s one bus.  Next the rental office is a 10×10 room.  We had to wait outside for the one agent to finish with the others in front of us.
The car was the worst car we rented.  The damage on the car was noted on a card, but it took several minutes to write it all down.  It would be easier to say one quarter panel was ok.
    Try someone else.

Do not rent from this company. Like other customers, we had a very hard time getting the shuttle. We ended up taking a different shuttle because the rental place did not answer the phone after multiple calls over a 20 minute span. Once arriving, we were presented with a long list of fees that tripled the cost we were originally expecting. We were forced to pay a huge fee for a highway toll pass that we only used twice. We could have saved more than
$50 but paying as we went. At this point we were extremely frustrated but had no other choice. We were given a small sedan that had multiple cosmetic damages to the exterior and interior. It was a horrible experience. After multiple calls to the corporate headquarters, we were hung up on twice and still have not been in contact with the rental company at San Juan. Please do not rent from this horrible business.

I also wish I could give zero stars instead of one! This place is the absolute worst and I wish I had read the yelp reviews before booking through Expedia. Definitely disappointed with Expedia for even providing such a shady place as an option.

We ended up not renting the car from U Save at all because there were a ton of surcharges that weren’t mentioned when I reserved the car through Expedia, resulting in the price being TRIPLED when we got to the counter. The attendant was incredibly rude and dishonest and tried to tell us that we needed additional insurance even though our own vehicle insurance had us covered. They tried to charge $15 extra per day for use of the toll road transponder, plus an extra $120 if we wanted to pay with debit instead of credit. And god knows whatever bogus taxes and fees they managed to make up, so that it ended up being $475 for one week.

We went to Vias car rental just around the corner and they charged $3 per day for use of the transponder for only the days that we used it. They didn’t try to scam us with any additional insurance requirements or made-up taxes, so that we ended up paying half the cost of what U-Save tried to charge us.

When I got back home I saw that U-Save charged me $50 even though we didn’t rent from them – I plan to call them, but I assume they will say it’s a cancellation fee and that it’s a lost cause. Well, I still saved a whole lot of money by not renting from these scammers.

DO NOT rent from U Save! I highly recommend Vias instead for good pricing, courteous service, and an overall pleasant and honest experience.

Like another review stated they sock on surcharges.  I rented for 3 days and did not plan to use the tolls as we wanted to see the country.  But I accidently went on one toll and entered where you can pay onto the pass.  I paid $5.00 then got off shortly.  When I turned in the car they asked me if I used any toll roads and I told them about my incident.  They told me they would have to charge me for 3 days of charges and added $42 to my bill.  I was very upset about this but they have you by the throat.  Beware!

As I read the other reviews my experience is all of them put together.
The only positive I have is that the car did not break down, although a repair light turned on a couple of days into a one week rental. All attempts to contact the rental agency failed.
It was difficult to get to the agency once we arrived at the airport.  We had to ask several people for directions.
The car was filthy in the inside. Seats with cigarette burns and several bumps and scratches in the body.  No power locks and no power windows is not a bad thing if the price is commensurate. However by the end of the week the price increased about a third.
We were offered the choice to accept or refuse express toll lanes.  We refused.  It turns out this is not something that could be refused.  This is a HUGE CAVEAT, the main reason I would not rent again and the main reason for writing this review.  At checkout we were supposed to pay 50 dollars for every toll we took during that week even though we had receipts.
Incredibly, the agent told us we had the option of taking local routes as an alternative to the highway.  The paperwork reflected our wishes yet these charges had to be made.  It is not until I mentioned going to court that the agent did something about it.  The agent rescinded the agreement reflecting that we accepted the express toll issue.  I am not the kind to write reviews or surveys, but this experience left such a bad taste I had to write this review.

The equivalent to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in Puerto Rico I believe is Departamento de Asuntos del Consumidor (DACO). If you are having trouble or are considering legal issues or complaints this is the place to start. Here is the link:    daco.pr.gov
The rest of our vacation was pretty smooth. However this is something that produces sour tastes and bad impression to an otherwise wonderful time.

My first ever review. The experience was bad. I reserved thru Expedia. We bought the extra insurance from expedia for our 4 day rental. The airport shuttle/driver was good. Fast and courteous. Did not take long to see the agent at the pickup location. They would not honor the expedia add-on insurance. Made us pay additional $10. per day for their insurance. The car was worn out. Almost 69k miles. after leaving, opened glove box and it just fell off. Has receipts from last user in it. plugged in GPS but the plugs had no power to them. Torrential downpour…wipers worn out. We purchased new ones..no big deal..under $20. us. The front end needed work..try going 60 mph and it would shake like crazy. The rental contract phone number did not work..just had to leave messages..never returned calls. We are seniors..too much hassle for us. We are back to Avis and pay less..Randy

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS U-SAVE.  We booked our rental car with this U-Save through Orbitz.  We arrived at the airport to find shuttles from every other rental car company to take you to their off-airport locations (all of the rental car agencies are at different off-airport sites).  There were no shuttles from U-Save.

We tried to call U-Save, but no one answered.  We called Orbitz, who were also unable to contact U-Save.  Some of the airport workers said that this U-Save often closes early and won’t answer their phone.  We were never able to get our rental car.

Needless to say, making a reservation with them is worthless.  Do not reserve a car with this U-Save if you expect to have a rental car when you arrive in San Juan.

This is my first time posting a negative review but these people are the worse!
I HAVE BEEN VICTIM TO THESE THIEVES. During my trip while parked at the grocery store a car bumped into us. There was no real damage, the bumper had a slight dent. USave in Puerto Rico kept my $500 and said I would receive a refund once the state insurance paid them. Coincidentally, the state paid them just over $600 and now they are saying the total for repair was $1100!? Funny, how it matches what they received from the state and my $500.!? The bumper was soooo small, it literally could be popped out, we were trying to do the right thing by following the laws/policies. They stole my $500! To Expedia, I begged, to NOT recommend them to any other travelers. This has been ongoing since June 2012 and we received our email 12/20/12 that they would be keeping my money.

The company engages in deceiving practices offering nice cars online through Orbitz.com.  Upon arrival to the airport, U-save does not have a counter at the airport, nor do they answer the telephone.  Orbitz had to intervene and call for the shuttle.  At the counter, I was told that they do not carry the car in the picture, and I got a substandard car with scratches all over; it had loose cables under the steering wheel, and it was a smoker’s car.  The brakes were low, and the A/C malfunctioned.  Needless to say, I returned the car immediately and was charged for the whole day.

This was by far the WORST car rental experience I’ve been through.  Shuttle took forever to pick us up (I had to call them and they still took a long time).  The shuttle didn’t have AC (that should’ve clued me in).  But this is nothing compared to the rest of the experience.

Apparently there was some obscure rule that I needed to bring my proof of insurance card with me and because I didn’t, they insisted that I needed 3rd pty coverage which cost an extra $10 a day.  I might as well have used a reputable company and gotten a luxury car for that rate (rate quoted was $22 per day but now ended up being $32 per day).  I couldn’t get my proof of insurance because it was a holiday so I was stuck with this bull crap cost added.

Then they gave us a car that was ancient (no power locks/windows, tons of dings and scratches) and when I tried to accelerate, the damn thing wouldn’t budge.  So as exhausted as we were from a long day of travel, we had to return the car back to get a new one.  I was BEYOND aggravated and should have just walked away but we were tired and we had our 2 daughters with us (both under 4yrs old) so we just got another car which was slightly better but still had its own issues (minor thankfully).

To top off the entire experience, when we returned the car, the guy at the counter said that we would had to pay for a smudge on the back bumper.  We did not have any incidents with the car and we self parked each night so I know we didn’t do that.  That was a big fight with the guy….and then the most obscene thing about the experience was that the amount the guy wants us to pay for this…an extra $500 for a smudge (we got pictures) that can be removed easily with a buffer.     We did not sign the final bill because we refused to pay for it.  This company is stealing from its customers and I cannot believe other companies are doing business with these thieves!!  My final bill was $700 for a compact car (kia) for 5 days.  OBSCENE!  I will be calling my credit car company to refuse payment on the extra $500.    I am disgusted by this entire situation.
DON’T RENT FROM HERE….YOU WILL REGRET IT.

This is my first ripoff report, and this company has some nerve – let me tell you.  I reserved and paid for a 7 day car rental from USAVE for my vacation in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

    1.  When I came, I had to wake up the shuttle driver from taking a nap, parked outside the airport in the van.

    2.  After arriving at their booth, I had to wait for 2 hrs until they got their act together to get me the car I rented.

    3.  The guy pulls up in a car, which is not a Mitsubishi Lancer like I ordered.  It looks beat up everywhere.  Bangs, dents, every window and side view mirror is manual.  The inside had water damage and very low grade materials covering the seats, which looked very worn.  It was the worst looking car I had ever rented.  I was very worried to even get in, and asked the guy how old it was.  He said 2 yrs, and they’re due to upgrade them any week now.  ye, right…  It looked like it was at least 15 yrs old.  I asked if I could have another, they said no.

    4.  I pulled out, trying to convince myself he was telling the truth and it was 2 yrs old.  The manual window opener thingy fell off the second I tried turning the window open.  The car drove very poorly, and I felt very belittled.  I couldn’t drive it.  We stopped to eat for 30 min, because we still hadn’t eaten since flying out of NY 8 hrs ago.  Then returned the car immediately.

    5.  Ooops.   “You signed a waiver –  NO REFUND”.  But I said – I drove less than 6 miles, and the gas is still full.  It’s only been 1 hr, and you have money from me covering a week’s car rental.  I would understand if they charged me for one day, but they refused to refund me a penny.

    6.  After having a crappy sunday, I called management up Monday (the next day).  They said “f* me, we had you sign a waiver, so no refund”.  Even though the waiver was signed before I saw the car….  I told them to please reconsider, as they were keeping an unfair amount of my money for a car I returned within 1 hr.  They refused.  I said I would go to my credit card, they said “go ahead”.

    7.  My credit card was a hastle too, since they hate to get involved.  After they “lost” my dispute form 3 times, finally they replied to my latest one.  They said “sorry, since u signed a NO REFUND”…  basically, we’ve got an excuse not to get involved and everyone except me prospered from this deal.

USAVE is the absolute worst.  No compromising.  Very rude.  Not one worker or manager that I spoke to sympathized with how unfare the situation was.  No one offered me any options.  This was horrible!  If I would have fronted the money for car insurance…..  That would have doubled my loss.

    NEVER RENT FROM USAVE!!!!!!!!!!!
